Giving Challenge

Few things provide as much satisfaction as being needed. We usually go to great lengths in seeking comfort and pleasure, and certainly do enjoy them. Yet even the most delightful pleasure seems a bit hollow if we're not doing something to make a difference.

And so it follows that one of the kindest things you can do for other people is to make it possible for them be needed. In your desire to help others, you naturally think of giving comfort and pleasure. Look for a way to also give challenge -- the challenge to make a difference.

Several years ago, certain residents of a nursing home were given the opportunity to make a difference when they were each permitted to select a houseplant and to make decisions related to its care. After a year and a half, the residents who were caring for houseplants were found to be more cheerful, active and alert, with less than half the death rate as a similar group of residents who were not caring for plants.

Even the most seemingly insignificant challenges can be truly life enhancing. Make a big difference by providing others with the opportunity to make a difference, too.

Sometimes listening is the best way to express yourself. Take time to listen, to really listen with the purity of your attention, to the person with whom you're talking. By so doing you vastly improve your ability to get your own points across.

The degree to which you understand, is the degree to which you can truly make yourself understood. Listening with interest ensures that you'll be heard when you speak.

People are happy to tell you all you need to know if you'll only make the effort to listen. Listen not only with your ears. Listen with your knowledge, your intuition, your compassion, your experience, your culture. Listen well and you will know.

Listen carefully and you'll hear opportunity knocking. Listen sincerely and you'll hear the truth. Listen with an open mind and you'll hear a teacher. Listen politely and you'll hear a friend. Listen to the world, understand and consider, and the world will listen to you.

The seed

We are full of energy and in need of direction. When that energy is guided toward creative achievement, the results can be spectacular. Plant the seed of encouragement in the fertile ground of a person's life, and it will grow into magnificent accomplishments.

Anyone has the capacity to do great things, yet far too few know it or believe it. No matter how fertile the ground may be, if no seed is planted, nothing will grow.

How many lives have been wasted in misery and destruction because they never received even the smallest seed of positive encouragement?

A seed is tiny. Yet when it is planted in the right place and at the right time, and nurtured with care, that tiny seed can grow into a ceaselessly abundant harvest.

Think of the lives around you where the seed of encouragement can take root and grow. Think of the difference you can make when you encourage yourself and when you offer your encouragement to others. Think of the seeds that you have the opportunity to plant. Spread the seeds of encouragement far and wide, and delight in the bountiful harvest that they will surely bring.

Work on it anyway..

At first your dream will seem impossible. Work on it anyway, and it goes from being impossible to improbable. There's now a tiny glimmer of hope. Still, even though it is possible, even though it could happen, most likely it won't. Work on it anyway.

Keep working on it, and soon you'll realize that it probably will happen. Your efforts have elevated your dream from impossible, all the way to likely. You start to feel that you've got it made, yet now is not the time to stop. Work on it anyway.

Then, the bottom drops out. Life throws you an unexpected curve. It all falls apart. Suddenly, your dream is not going to happen. Work on it anyway. Look for a way to make it happen. You've come too far to give up without a fight.

Work on it anyway, and you'll find a way to reclaim your dream. The obstacles which seemed so insurmountable, were actually just the final step on the road to fulfillment of your dream. You've finally arrived -- you've attained your dream and life is great. Work on it anyway. Now is your chance to reach even higher.

Accountable

Life holds us accountable whether we like it or not. Every action produces irrefutable consequences. And though we may try to hide from those consequences, in the end they always catch up to us.

What will you do today to uphold the responsibility you have to your own possibilities? What about in the next twenty minutes? What consequences will your actions produce?

Hold yourself accountable, and the consequences work in your favor. Accept the responsibility for your own life, and you gain control of your own destiny. It's easy, and often very reasonable, to blame your troubles on something or someone outside yourself. It's easy to expect other people, or changing conditions, to solve your problems for you. It's easy to expect dumb luck to bring fulfillment into your life. Easy, and yet sadly misguided.

Ultimately, only you can be accountable for you. It is a serious responsibility and a boundless opportunity.
