7 Tips to unwind stress

1. Take Up A Hobby
Remember; a hobby is not a commercial activity. It gives you peace of mind and helps you detour from your daily routine. A common mistake made by most is to take up an activity that closely relates to office work. If you're a computer programmer, DON'T design video games in your free time! Taking up completely unrelated hobbies will divert your mind and reduce stress.

2. Adopt A Pet
Evidence suggests that having pets around helps keep a lid on stress. Activities like playing with your pet, tending to it and even such mundane tasks like removing ticks from your dog or taking it for a walk can prove a great tonic for hypertension.

3. Get A Massage
There's nothing like a soothing massage for instant relief from day to day stress. A ten-minute neck and shoulder massage should revitalize you instantly!

4. Watch A Funny Film
Even if you are feeling really busy or tired, humour never fails to put the zest back into your smile. Make the time to catch a funny flick at home or in the theatre.

5. Get A Facial
Go to your local salon (guys too), sink into a comfortable chair and surrender yourself to the dexterous hands of the facial expert. You'll emerge rejuvenated and your skin will glow too.

6. Commune With Nature
Every once in a while visit your ancestral village, a hill station or even take a walk in the local park. The sight of green trees, ponds and animals gives you positive vibes and makes you feel positive again.

7. Take Up A Physical Activity
Aerobics, swimming or a brisk walk in the park jumpstart the feel good hormones of the brain. Choose your favourite exercise and stick to it!

Tips for Teeth care

Learn to brush properly: Brush your teeth properly in order to keep your teeth scrupulously clean. It is important to learn how to brush properly. Move the brush from the gum to the biting edge, working the bristles between the teeth to dislodge food particles. Besides the teeth, the gum should also be cleaned. Massage them in the same stroke as brushing your teeth and give them an occasional extra massage, rubbing them gently in circular movement with a little toothpaste on your finger. Brush teeth systematically around the front and then the inside followed by a sawing movement across the tops of the teeth.

A good toothbrush is as important as the toothpaste. Hence it is important to choose shape and brand of toothbrush. A good one should have small angled head and soft to medium rounded bristles. This is important as it helps clean all those hidden areas of your teeth.

Always change your toothbrush after every 3 months.

Floss regularly to remove the plaque and food debris stuck between the teeth.

Use a mouthwash to make sure that your breath is fresh. Put a few drops in warm water and rinse your mouth after you clean your teeth in the morning.

Brush your teeth twice daily or after every meal if possible.

Visit the dentist regularly and this will help keep your teeth healthy.

Some home-made beauty tips that will keep your teeth sparkling clean

For sparkling teeth, rub them once or twice a week with a dried bay leaf (tej patta) or with table salt.

For bringing glitter in your teeth rub them with cotton wool dipped (and then squeezed out) in hydrogen peroxide. This has a slight bleaching effect. You can also make a liquid of these products by mixing two teaspoons of table salt and two teaspoons of hydrogen peroxide in a large glass of warm water. Then wash your mouth.

If your teeth have stains, you can remove them by rubbing strawberries or putting three tablespoons of soda bicarbonate with two tablespoons of salt.

To use as mouthwash take ¼ cup of vinegar, ½ cup wine, ½ cup honey, and 1 teaspoon of powdered cloves and boil them. This works as an effective mouthwash.

Did you know that in 1999, 175,000 women diagnosed with invasive breast cancer (1 every 3 minutes).

Pathophysiology
The etiology of breast cancer remains unknown, but two Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Mastectomy breast cancer genes have been cloned-the BRCA-1 and the BRCA-2 genes. Estrogen stimulation is an important promoter of breast cancer, and, therefore, patients who have a long history of menstruation are at increased Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Mastectomy risk. Early menarche and late menopause are risk factors for breast cancer. Late age at Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Mastectomy, birth of first child or null parity also increase the risk of breast cancer. Family history of breast cancer in a first-degree relative Breast Cancer Chemotherapy Mastectomy and history of benign breast disease also increase the risk of breast cancer. 15.When breast cancer is confined to the breast, the five-year survival rate is over 95 percent.

How to Do A Self Exam?

1.While Lying Down

Place a pillow under your right shoulder, and your right hand under your head.
Check the breast tissue using a circular, rubbing motion without lifting the fingers.

Vary pressure of your fingers to examine the different layers of breast tissue.
Light pressure: enough to move the skin, but not the underlying layers.
Medium pressure: checks the mid layer of tissue.
Deep pressure: press almost to the ribs, just short of causing discomfort.
Use one of the three techniques for your examination (remember to include the underarm tissue in your exam)

Lines: start in the underarm area and lower your fingers until they are below the breast, move back upwards toward the middle. Use this up and down movement over the entire breast area.
Circles: start at the outer edge of your breast, moving your fingers slowly around the breast in a circle. Examine the breast in smaller and smaller circles, moving toward the nipple.
Wedges: at the outer edge of the breast, move your fingers toward the nipple and back to the edge in a V shape motion. Perform the same movement around the entire breast.

2.While Standing in the Shower

(follow the same techniques outlined above)

3.Mirror Exam

With arms lowered to your sides, look for any dimpling, puckering or other abnormality.

Look for any discharge from both nipples.

After performing the following test if you have any doubts as to whether you have this disease or you feel that you should do a thorough check up then please contact your physician or an specialized doctor.

What you gave is your only investment

What one gives to others is the only thing he gets. There is a famous sarcastic saying about misers which goes like this: "A miser is a greater donor than a Daata! Well, the reason is that a Daata will give away his things to others and may be uses a little portion of his money, whereas a miser gaurds his money his entire life and without he enjoying any bit of it, people take it away after he dies :)". A person who does not help others cannot be helped even by the God.

Once there used to live a great miser, who never gave anything to anyone. He obviously reached naraka and was given huge unbearable punishments. He used to lament very much for his poor state and beg God everyday to save him from the naraka. God, as usual, took pity on the poor state of the miser and wanted to somehow find a way of helping him. But even with a lot of effort, a few meetings with Chitragupta, finds nothing which the miser gave to anybody in order that God can give him something. Finally God managed to find a tiny piece of good that the miser did in some of his janmas:

The miser once, somehow, gave a small piece of spoilt banana to somebody. God, seeing it as an oppurtunity to help the lamenting miser in naraka, made a stick appear before him — with which he could climb out of naraka. The miser very happy to have received the fortune, quickly began climbing the stick. Other people in the naraka, who were also longing to get out of naraka, tried to use the stick to get out. The miser started pushing down all the other people and was saying that "the stick was provided for me by God, and you cannot use it". Immediately the stick dissappeared and the miser was back in the naraka.

Morals in the story:

One must always share whatever he has with others. A person who is a miser will never deserve higher worlds.
Even God cannot help people who do not help others. Everyone has to bear the consequences his own karma. The easiest way is to do good karmas in the name of God, and let Him decide the vidhi. There is no need to blame the God for our difficulties. It was our own karma which gave us the difficulties.

The Journey Toward A Healthy Life: A Six-Day Diet Regimen

BREAKFAST FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS:
Fifteen minutes before you are ready to eat breakfast squeeze the juice of one lemon in a medium glass of hot water and drink it. The rest of the meal consists of 250 ml of fruit juice (orange or grape), 5 level tablespoons of cottage cheese, 250g fresh fruit - you can eat only one kind of fruit or combine fruits in a salad (no bananas or avocados). You may drink one cup of tea, with milk and sugar if desired. Between breakfast and lunch you should drink all the vegetable broth (recipe provided) as you can hold. Also eat fresh raw fruit. Make a large quantity of the vegetable broth and store in the refrigerator.

LUNCH FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS:
Drink two cups of vegetable broth during the meal. Make a salad by chopping fresh, raw vegetables in a bowl. Use four from the following list: Asparagus, beans, beets, cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, cucumbers, celery, green peppers, lettuce, onions, pumpkin, spinach, squash, tomatoes. For dessert, slice fresh fruit and serve with drizzle of honey. You may drink a small glass of fresh milk if desired. Between lunch and dinner drink all the vegetable juice you desire and eat all the fresh fruit you want.

DINNER FOR EACH OF THE SIX DAYS:
Drink two cups of vegetable broth during the meal. Select two or three of the different kinds of vegetables listed and steam-cook them with a little butter. Eat a generous helping of each. Eat a medium slice of whole-wheat bread with butter. For dessert, eat a fresh fruit salad. If you feel hungry after dinner, eat as much fresh fruits as you want and drink vegetable juice.

RECIPE FOR VEGETABLE BROTH:
To make vegetable broth, dice 7 carrots and 1 small bunch of celery into small pieces. Place in 2 quarts water and boil for 15 minutes. Add one-third bunch of fresh parsley and a large handful of fresh spinach. Flavour with tomatoes, green peppers or garlic. Boil 10 minutes more. Drain off the broth, retaining the fluid. Flavour with salt of onion. This recipe makes about one day's supply. It can be used hot or cold. The purpose of this broth is to flush the system, so drink lots of it during the 6 days. It's loaded with minerals.

NOTE :
This is a tough journey and you will face problems in the way but be strong and don't give up. At the end of the first day, you may feel slight discomfort by having changed your regular mode of eating, but this is natural. About the third or fourth day the bowels and kidneys will begin to move freely and much toxic waste will be eliminated. You may experience headache and perhaps nausea but do not become alarmed. About the fifth day, you will begin to feel a surge of energy. Your general health will begin to improve and colour returned to your complexion, your eyes will begin to brighten, and you will feel wonderfully healthy. Continue on the diet until the end of the sixth day. From now on, follow a balanced diet with health giving whole foods, fresh fruit and vegetables.

A sage presented a prince with a set of three small dolls. The prince was not amused.
"Am I a girl that you give me dolls?" he asked.
"This is a gift for a future king," said the man. "If you look carefully, you'll see a hole in the ear of each doll."
"So?"
The sage handed him a piece of string.
"Pass it through each doll," he said.
Intrigued, the prince picked up the first doll and put the string into the ear.
It came out from the other ear.
"This is one type of person," said the man. "Whatever you tell him, comes out from the other ear. He doesn't retain anything."
The prince put the string into the second doll. It came out from the mouth.
"This is the second type of person," said the man. "Whatever you tell him, he tells everybody else."
The prince picked up the third doll and repeated the process. The string did not reappear from anywhere else.
"This is the third type of person," said the man. "Whatever you tell him is locked up within him. It never comes out."
"What is the best type of person?" asked the prince.
The man handed him a fourth doll, in answer.
When the prince put the string into the doll, it came out from the other ear.
"Do it again," said the sage. The prince repeated the process. This time the string came out from the mouth. When he put the string in a third time, it did not come out at all.
"This is the best type of person," said the sage. "To be trustworthy, a man must know when not to listen, when to remain silent and when to speak out."

Hard Work

Hard work can do wonders

In Indian culture vairaagyam was always given ultimate importance. But careful, there is a very thin line that separates vairaagyam and laziness. In vairaagyam all karma is done but without expecting anything in return, without being involved in the materialistic aspects of karma. Bhagiratha, with his unparalleled effort to bring Ganga to earth, showed us how much effort a man can put in and as a result what wonders can be done.

On knowing that his ancestors (60000 Sagara Kumaras) will reach swarga only if the pure waters of Ganga flow through their ashes, from his mother, Bhagiratha immediately leaves to Himalayas to do tapas for Lord Brahma:

After purifying himself in a pushkarini, it starts tapas with extra-ordinary concentration.

Starts with padmaasana and in winter stood in the freezing waters of the lake with water up to chest!

In Summer stands in the middle of burning pancha-agnis (four agnis + sun) and steadily stared at the sun with eyes wide open (all the while concentrating on Brahma deva)!!

During the first few days, he had food only once a day. Later it was once in a few days. Then it became once in a month. After that, he just used to drink a little water and continue his ‘Tapas’. Finally the air was his only food!!!
1000 years passed….!!!!

Brahma, the creator of the worlds, on the requests of Gods to save them from the tremendous tapaagni of Bhagiratha, appears before him and blesses him with children and Ganga. However, Brahma deva suggests that none except Parama Shiva can take the force when Ganga falls onto earth, and if not with that force earth will be washed away…

Men are of three kinds:

There are cowards, who do not begin their work at all, afraid that some trouble may arise midway.

Those who begin but later give up the task, afraid of the difficulties that arise.
Brave people who belong to a third group. They continue to work in spite of even an army of difficulties, and finally achieve the goal.

Bhagiratha belonged to this third category of brave men. He again began a severe ‘Tapas’ to please Lord Ishwara. With folded hands, and standing on one leg, he meditated on Lord iswara with the deepest concentration. So a whole year passed. Pleased with Bhagiratha’s devotion Lord ishwara takes the immense force of Ganga and controls her in his jataajutam. He completely stops her from flowing to teach her a lesson (she was a mischievous girl, proud of her strength!), but for Bhagiratha it was another difficulty… But he again with tapas pleases Lord Shiva to release Ganga down to earth. Ganga followed Bhagiratha shyly and slowly, like his daughter (Bhaagirathi). But she grew a little mischievous, though Shiva taught her a lesson once, when near Jahnu maharshi’s ashram. She wandered all over the Ashrama like a small girl and the entire place was filled with water. Disturbed from tapas by it, Jahnu maharshi in a single gulp swallows her entirely. And suddenly difficulties again for Bhagiratha. But it is not the first time for him, so immediately pleases Jahnu maharshi (Jaahnavi comes out of Jahnu maharshi’s ear) and finally sends his ancestors to higher worlds…..

Draupadi

Draupadi, an ikon of a true Indian woman

Draupadi, the daughter of King Drupada, appears from the yagnyaagni as a full grown, in the bloom of her youth. One can observe that it is always Paramaatma who takes birth and avataaras (”Paritraanaaya sadhunam …”). However, always Yoga-Maaya (or Shakti) never takes birth, she just appears. It is the same case with Sita devi, Rukmini devi, Draupadi, Maatulungi etc. The following piece of story of draupadi shows the boundaries of following Dharma. May be none can be better!

Ashwatthaama, the chiranjeevi, does a daaruna krutyam after the Mahaabhaaratam. Unusual to his nature, He, without even little daya, beheads the sleeping babies of draupadi — the upa-paandavas. Draupadi realizes what happened. All her 10 sons, who were little baalakas, who were sleeping, who never did any kind of harm to Ashwatthaama and who cannot even react to the harm committed to them were lying in a pool of blood. Draupadi breaks down to tears and weeps in great sorrow. Arjuna very sad himself, consoles Her and says it does not look nice for a Veera maata to cry like this. He says that He will immediately avenge the act and kill Ashwatthaama. On killing him, she can take bath standing on his head. Immediately Lord Krishna and Arjuna set out on their Hanumadhdhvaja ratham to catch the fleeing Ashwatthaama.

Seeing that Arjuna is closing by his ratham and that his horses are a little exhausted, Aswaththaama sees Brahmaastra as the only way to save himself. Though not knowing the way of retrieving the astra, he immediately uses Brahmaastra on Arjuna, after stopping the ratham, doing aachamanam and purifying himself. Lord Krishna orders Arjuna to use Brahmaastra to counter Ashwatthaama’s. Arjuna also purifies himself, does achamanam, does a pradakshina to the Almighty and uses Brahmaastra. The two astras, one like Agni and the other like sun, fight each other and in no time the worlds start to burn under the influence of the astras. Krishna, the protector of the worlds, immediately orders Arjuna to take back both Astras, as only a Brahmachaari can take back a Brahmaastra!

Arjuna takes back both the Brahmaastras, showing clearly what a perfect Brahmachaari he was. Arjuna, who was the friend of the Askalita Brahmachaari Lord Krishna, obviously knows the shastras and the ways to maintain his Brahmacharyam, though married. Arjuna ties Ahswaththaama and takes him to Draupadi, like a Yagnya pashu is taken to the Yagnya shaala. The acts of Draupadi in this following episode make even Krishna praise Krishnaa (Draupadi) for her Dharma.

On seeing the killer of all her sons being brought by Arjuna, Draupadi, of the beauty of her nature out of compassion, does a namaskar to him and says as per the Vedas in the absence of the Guru, Guru-putra takes his place, so she is doing a namaskaar to Drona! It was unbearable for her having him brought being bound and she said: “Release him, for he is a brahmana, our Aacharya. Do not make his mother, Drona’s wife, cry the way I do in my chastity shedding tears constantly in distress over a lost child”. Yudhishtira, Arjuna, Nakula, Sahadeva, Saatyaki, Krishna and other queens supported the statements of Paanchaali as they were in accord with the principles of Sanaatana Dharma, of justice, merciful, without duplicity and glorious in equity. Krishna, amazed by the Dharmya vartana of Draupadi, praises her very much. However, Bhima also raised a valid point that a person who by nature has daya is a brahmana, is Ashwatthaama, who mercilessly killed the baalakas, worth being called one? Saying “surely death is the only punishment for such a person”, Bhima proceeds to kill Ashwatthaama, but the Lord, with His chaturbhuja’s stops Bhima and says the following with a smile:

“The Guru-putra, a braahmana must not be killed - this both is by Me, certainly prescribed to be carried out abiding by the rules.” However, Arjuna has to keep to the truth as promised while pacifying his wife, and also act to the satisfaction of Bhima and Himself (by punishing the bad). So they remove the divya mani on the head of Ashwatthaama and remove his hair, as, for a veera, tonsuring is equivalent to killing him.

Morals in the story:

The Dhramya vartana of Draupadi is well portrayed in the story. This shows us that, even at the time of great stress, sorrow, difficulty, one never must deviate from the path of truth, Dharma.

Even though Ashwatthaama was great, in his momentary anger he committed an unpardonable crime. One must be very careful and need to think what is right and what is wrong before acting. This is what the pandavas do in the later part of the story, with the help of Krishna. They, though Kshattriyas, were not overwhelmed by revenge. They acted according to the words of Krishna, who is Dharma in human form.
The importance given to keeping up one’s word is protrayed well. Arjuna promises Draupadi to kill Ashwatthaama, but according to Dharma is must not be killed. So they do an equivalent act of killing.

The importance of cleanliness is also displayed. Both Ashwatthaama and Arjuna purify themselves, do aachamanam before chanting the mantras for Brahmaastra. They do this even when they were in such a great press for time.

The power of Brahmacharyam is well shown through this story. Arjuna, who knew the Shatras, was a brahmachaari and hence could not only take back his, but Ashwatthaama’s astra too.

The heart of a mother is well exposed when Draupadi comments “Do not make his mother, Drona’s wife, cry the way I do in my chastity shedding tears constantly in distress over a lost child“. She knows the pain of loosing children, so did not want another mother to experience it!

Respect

Respect to Elders
The story of markandeya maharshi, the child born with Alpaayu but made a chiranjeeva by the grace of Lord Shiva, is well known. His father was Mrukanda maharshi. He also had alpaayu. So after his upanayanam his father told him to bow to all elders and get their blessings. He followed his father’s words. He used to bow to every one whether a pandit or a lay man. Once saptarshis came to Mrukanda’s father. Mrukanda in his usual habit, bowed to them and got the blessings of the great saptarishis. The blessing was “dhirga ayushman bhava”. After knowing the truth that is life was short they went to Lord Bramha to solve this puzzle. Mrukanda bowed to Brahma too. And he also gave him the same boon, “dhirga ayushman bhava”.

Morals in the story:

Respecting elders and parents is one of the foremost principles of Indian culture. Even Lord Krishna used to prostrate before his elders, however bad they may be…
Since the saptarishis always speak the truth, whatever they spoke became true. With the power of truth, even the unavoidable death can be stopped!

Lemon

| | | 0 comments

Like all citrus fruits, lemons are a good source of vitamin C which enhances the beauty of your skin and has a lot to give both to health and beauty. They are also good for cleansing your digestive
system.

The various benefits of lemons:

Squeeze some lemon juice into warm water and drink it. It helps by cleansing your body of toxins.

Cellulite can also benefit from lemons. First of all, start each day with a drink of hot water and squeezed lemons. Water retention is also banished this way. Then use a lemon based cellulite oil to rub onto the affected areas.

Lemons can be rubbed directly onto skin and left for about 2 hours before rinsing. This is good to reduce wrinkles and treat blemishes. The treatment will work better if followed by olive oil after rinsing. It works by speeding up skin renewal and uncovering a fresh new layer of skin. However, it is important not to do this before going out in the sun as it will have a bleaching effect.

Another beauty treatment that can be done with lemons is a hair tonic. Massage some lemon juice onto hair and leave it for a while before rinsing. Again, do not do this before going in the sun. This treatment is especially good for greasy hair as it will regulate the sebaceous glands which produce oil and make the hair shine and prevent dandruff.

Bad habits

A wealthy man requested an old scholar to wean his son away from his bad habits.
The scholar took the youth for a stroll through a garden. Stopping suddenly he asked the boy to pull out a tiny plant growing there. The youth held the plant between his thumb and forefinger and pulled it out. The old man then asked him to pull out a slightly bigger plant. The youth pulled hard and the plant came out, roots and all.
"Now pull out that one," said the old man pointing to a bush. The boy had to use all his strength to pull it out.

"Now take this one out," said the old man, indicating a guava tree. The youth grasped the trunk and tried to pull it out. But it would not budge.

"I – It's impossible," said the boy, panting with the effort.
"So it is with bad habits," said the sage. "When they are young it is easy to pull them out but when they take hold they cannot be uprooted."
The session with the old man changed the boy's life.

Working couple and marriage

Friday, December 12, 2008

| | | 0 comments
Gone are the days when it was expected of woman to exclusively stay at home, nurse the children, look after the household work and take care of the in-laws. Though the notion still exists but today's woman is also expected to help her husband to contribute towards the household expenses. And thus it is even tougher for women, for now she has much more responsibilities and her duties both towards her house and work has increased. Now a days women are more independent and do not like to be dependent on their husband. But this also leads to constant friction between the couple resulting into conflicts in the relationship. Thus to keep the marriage going, some sacrifices and compromises have to be made by both the parties. It is very often seen that the sense of equality and spirit of independence felt by the career woman results in ego clashes. Thus both husband and wife have to consider that every relationship requires co-operation, trust, understanding and responsibilities without which the marriage will not survive.

Following are a few tips that working couples should always remember in order to make their marriage tick.

Husbands should remember……………

That his wife is working so the family can live a better life and enjoy every facility available to them.

To respect his wife's decision and feelings.

That his wife ahs an individuality and she cannot be expected to only be a housewife and sit at home when she is well educated and is fully capable of earning and supporting the family.

To help the wife in the household chores and share the kitchen work, cutting vegetables and help her with dishwashing in case the maid takes a holiday.

Not be touchy and suspicious about phone calls for her from her male colleagues, which may be only official.

Not to doubt her character and should allow her to attend office parties and picnics without insisting on accompany her.

Help her with her work is she needs it.

Wifes should remember……………..

Never boost about your individuality and independence.

Never give an impression that just because you are not dependent on your husband you can do anything and that your husband has no right to tell you anything.

Never mix up office tension with family. Once you are out of the office forget about it and concentrate on your family.

Never mention office gossip to your husband if he is not interested.

Don't be extravagant just because you are earning.

Avoid praising your male colleagues too much on their looks or behaviour. Even if your boss is nice to you, you don't have to boast the fact to your hubby who would feel jealous and sometimes even suspicious.

Don't be in a hurry to raise a family, as it would affect your career growth. Decide in consultation with your husband, the right time to have the kid and whether you would like to continue working later on.

Don't fight over small matters and learn to avoid unnecessary tensions.

Benefits of Honey

| | | 0 comments

Of course, we all know that honey is one of nature's most delicious treats, but did you know that there are many topical uses for honey as well? Because honey contains vitamins, minerals, and amino acids, it is a wonderful beauty aid that nourishes the skin and the hair. Honey acts as an antibacterial and antifungal agent and helps disinfect and speed the healing process in wounds, scrapes and burns.

For best results, use raw honey. Raw honey is unprocessed and has up to 50 percent more vitamins than processed or cooked honey.

Following are the various benefits of honey:

Honey mixed with ground almonds makes an excellent facial cleansing scrub.

A tablespoon of honey whisked together with an egg white, 1 teaspoon of glycerin and about 1/4 cup of flour makes an excellent firming mask. Just smooth on the face, leave on 15 minutes, and rinse off with warm water. You'll love the results.

Honey also makes a great moisturizing pack. Just mix 2 tablespoons of honey with 2 teaspoons of whole milk, smooth over the face and throat, and let it do its job for 15 minutes. Rinse off with warm water, and finish splashing with cold water.

Honey also makes a great lotion for dry patches of skin on hands, elbows, or other parts. Just mix 1 teaspoon of honey with 1 teaspoon of olive oil and a 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice. Apply to hands, elbows, heels of your foot, etc., and wash off after 15 minutes. Instant relief!

Honey works well on chapped lips and for acne because it has antibacterial properties.

To give your hair lustrous shine, mix 1 teaspoon of honey into 4 cups of warm water. Use as a hair rinse. And if you're a blond, add the juice of 1 lemon, too.
Mix 1 tablespoon of honey with a cup of warm water. Use it as a mouthwash. Honey cleans teeth and dentures, and kills germs in the mouth.

Dharmam

A young sage sitting in meditation under a tree was splattered by the droppings of a bird.

He looked up angrily at the culprit and such was the intensity of his wrath that the bird was reduced to ash.

His concentration disturbed, the sage got up and went in search of food. He knocked at the door of a house but there was no answer. He knocked again and the lady of the house shouted that she was coming. Presently she came out with food and seeing that he was annoyed at having had to wait so long, smiled and said: "Please don't try to burn me with your angry glance like you did that bird. My dharma as a housewife is first to take care of the needs of my family before attending to the needs of others."

The sage realised that she was no ordinary woman and was ashamed of himself. He asked her to teach him what dharma was. She said he should see Dharma Vyadha.

The sage went in search of Dharma Vyadha expecting to find a venerable sage but the man turned out to be a meatseller.

Dharma Vyadha made him wait while he served his customers. When the sage showed signs of impatience, the meatseller smiled and said: "Just as the woman's first duty was to her family, my first duty is to my customers."

So the sage waited. When the last of his customers had gone, the meatseller turned to the sage and invited him home.

When they reached Dharma Vyadha's house the sage was again made to wait while his host lovingly attended to his parents. It was quite some time before the meatseller could return to his guest but the young man showed no trace of anger. A transformation had come over him.

"Now I know what dharma is," he said, rising and bowing to the meatseller.

Giving up the path of asceticism he returned home and begged forgiveness of his parents for having deserted them in their old age.

"I seek your blessings," he said, "to give me strength to do my dharma."

Who is miser?

| | | 0 comments

The king was to pass by a beggar's hut and the man was beside himself with excitement, not because he was about to see the king but because the king was known to part with expensive jewels and huge sums of money when moved by compassion.
He saw the king's chariot just as a kindly man was filling his begging bowl with uncooked rice. Pushing the man aside, he ran into the street, shouting praises of the king and the royal family.

The chariot stopped and the king beckoned to the beggar.
"Who are you?" he asked.

"One of the most unfortunate of your subjects," said the beggar. "Poverty sits on my doorstep and follows me about like a dog. I haven't eaten since yesterday afternoon!"
"Have you nothing for your king except a tale of woe?" said the ruler, putting out his hand. "Give me something."

The beggar, astonished, carefully picked up 5 grains of rice from his bowl and laid them on the king's outstretched palm.

The king drove away. The beggar's disappointment was great. He raved and ranted and cursed the king again and again for his miserliness. Finally, his anger spent, he went on his rounds.

When he returned home in the evening he found a bag of rice on the floor.
"Some generous soul has been here," he thought and took out a handful of rice from the bag. To his astonishment there was a small piece of gold in it. He realised then that the bag had been sent by the king. He emptied the rice on the floor, feeling sure there would be more gold pieces in it, and he was right. He found 5, one for each grain of rice he had given the king.

"It is not the king who has been miserly," thought the man, sadly. "If I had been generous and given him the whole bowl of rice, I would have been a rich man today."

Moral: " Be generous in your deeds"

Once upon a time two brothers who lived on adjoining farms fell into conflict.

It was the first serious rift in 40 years of farming side by side, sharing machinery, and trading labor and goods as needed without a hitch. Then the long collaboration fell apart. It began with a small misunderstanding and it grew into a major difference, and finally it exploded into an exchange of bitter words followed by weeks of silence.

One morning there was a knock on John's door. He opened it to find a man with a carpenter's toolbox. "I'm looking for a few days work" he said."Perhaps you would have a few small jobs here and there I could help with? Could I help you?

"Yes," said the older brother. "I do have a job for you. Look across the creek at that farm. That's my neighbor, in fact, it's my younger brother.Last week there was a meadow between us and he took his bulldozer to the river levee and now there is a creek between us.

Well, he may have done this to spite me, but I'll go him one better. See that pile of lumber by the barn?I want you to build me a fence - - an 8-foot fence -- so I won't need to see his place or his face anymore."

The carpenter said, "I think I understand the situation. Show me the nails and the post hole digger and I'll be able to do a job that pleases you."

The older brother had to go to town, so he helped the carpenter get the materials ready and then he was off for the day. The carpenter worked hard all that day measuring, sawing, nailing, and hammering.

About sunset when the farmer returned, the carpenter had just finished his job. The farmer's eyes opened wide, his jaw dropped. There was no fence there at all.

It was a bridge -- a bridge stretching from one side of the creek to the other! A fine piece of work handrails and all -- and the neighbor, his younger brother, was coming across, his hand outstretched."You are quite a fellow to build this bridge after all I've said and done."

The two brothers stood at each end of the bridge, and then they met in the middle, taking each other's hand. They turned to see the carpenter hoist his toolbox on his shoulder.

"No, wait! Stay a few days. I've a lot of other projects for you," said the older brother.

"I'd love to stay on," the carpenter said, "but, I have many more love bridges to build."

Benefits of Garlic

Benefits of Garlic

Garlic has been around for centuries and is known and recognized for its medicinal powers. From the earliest times right up until today, garlic has been used for various forms of healing, as well as building strength and endurance. Studies have proved that garlic is best for prevention of heart disease and cancer. In the ancient times garlic has been used to treat everything from leprosy to wounds in both world wars and different other diseases.

Garlic for your Heart
Studies have shown that garlic aids with circulation by widening blood vessels, thus lowering blood pressure. Garlic works in the body on the platelets, which are the blood clotting cells, making them less likely to stick together and cling to artery walls causing heart attacks. Garlic is also credited with dissolving clot forming proteins that affect the formation of plaque. It is also believed that garlic may interfere with the metabolism of cholesterol and aid with lowering the over all cholesterol count. All these factors lower the risk of heart attack and stroke.

Garlic prevents cancer
Garlic helps in preventing cancer and kills the growth if cancer cells. Garlic contains allium which is helpful in preventing cancer. Also one component of garlic, alliin, is an antioxidant. Some nutrients, such as selenium, vitamin C, vitamin E, and in particular alliin, scavenge free radicals, the free-roaming, unstable molecules that lead to cell damage and premature aging. Free radicals have also been implicated in the growth of tumors. In laboratory animals, garlic extracts have actually inhibited the growth of cancer cells.

Other Benefits of Garlic
Garlic helps combat colds and the flu. It is used to treat sore throats, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis (hardening of the arteries), digestive disorders, bladder infections, and liver and gallbladder problems. It's believed to kill harmful bacteria in the stomach and protect against gastric cancer. It appears to be a potent antioxidant and may boost the response of your immune system. It also works as an anti-inflammatory. Garlic is effective against bacterial, fungal, viral, and parasitic infections.

Include Garlic in your diet
Garlic comes in many different forms including fresh herb or clove, liquid, oil, powder and capsules. If you find that the pungent odor of garlic is a bit more than you bargained for you can purchase the odorless garlic supplements. But it is best if you get your quota of garlic in food, as it may be more easily absorbed into your system.

A word of caution
Don't use garlic supplements if you're taking anticoagulants (blood thinners) or hypoglycemics (a type of diabetes drug). Do not take if breastfeeding. Rarely, may cause allergic reactions.

Sirisha aka Siri, known to me since over 2 years as my close friend's wife. Behind every successful man, there is a successful woman.. This is very much true in Gopi n Siri's case. A woman playin different roles at home n work and still keeps cool and has only one thing in mind is that her husband should top the charts in his profession.. Siri is juz that simple yet motivated wife and Gopi is lucky to have her.

Oh yeh, this woman, she acts weird sometimes.. Beware of her questions which make u feel that you really dont know anything in this world. Woman, askin too many questions!!!! Hmmm... And the mails she forwards.. Hmm... Interesting... I like it!!!

Siri is very honest, open in her talks... Maybe I would say, her speech is mirrored by her heart n mind. I personally envy this couple and would also pray for their safety and good luck.

Walking

| | | 1 comments

Evarni choosina edhee gola ee madhya anduke meelo evarikaina interest untey follow avvandi lekapotey teliyani vallaki cheppandi...

Fitness walking is easy, safe and inexpensive. It’s aerobic, it burns calories, and it’s an ideal fat-burning activity. It conditions the heart, improves muscle tone and strength, relieves stress, and can help with back pain, osteoporosis, respiratory problems, diabetes, arthritis, cardiac rehabilitation and a variety of other health problems. Walking is an injury-free way for everybody to keep fit, and fit kids are fitter when all the family walks together.

How to Walk for Weight Control

Weight is determined mostly by the balance of calories - how many you burn vs. how many you eat each day. To lose weight, you need to increase your activity to burn more and/or eat fewer calories each day.

A pound of fat equals 3500 calories. To lose 1 pound a week you will need to expend 3500 more calories than you eat that week, whether through increased activity or decreased eating or both. Losing 1-2 pounds of fat a week is a sensible goal, and so you will want to use the combination of increased activity and eating less that will total 3500 calories for 7 days.

Your weight x distance = energy used walking. Time does not matter as much as distance. If you speed up to walking a mile in 13 minutes or less, you will be burning more calories per mile. But for most beginning walkers, it is best to increase the distance before working on speed. A simple rule of thumb is 100 calories per mile for a 150 pound person.

Day Dreaming

| | | 0 comments

Gopal Bhar lived next door to a poor couple who had a habit of day-dreaming.
One day the husband said to his wife: "If I had some money I would buy a few cows."
"Then we would have a lot of milk," said his wife. "I could make plenty of butter and ghee and we could send some milk to my sister too." "Send milk to your sister!" exclaimed her husband. "How dare you suggest such a thing!"

"But we would have milk to spare," said his wife.

"We'll sell it!" said her husband. "I don't want any more talk on the subject and to make sure you don't carry milk to her when I'm away, I'm going to break every pot in the house!" And picking up the four or five pots they had, smashed them on the floor.
Gopal Bhar who was passing by at that time, asked him why he was breaking the pots and when he learnt the reason picked up a stick and started beating the air with it.
"What are you doing?!" asked his neighbour, puzzled.

"Driving away your cows!" said Gopal. "They've eaten the cucumbers in my garden."
"Eaten you cucumbers!" exclaimed the other man, indignantly. "But you don't even have a garden!"

"I'm going to have one soon," said Gopal, "and I'm going to grow cucumbers in it," and he began hitting out with the stick again.

The neighbours finally realised that Bhar was trying to show them how foolish it was to live in a world of make-believe and felt ashamed of themselves.

Evil begets Evil

| | | 0 comments

There was once a king who was so cruel and unjust that his subjects yearned for his death or dethronement.

However, one day he surprised them all by announcing that he had decided to turn over a new leaf.“No more cruelty, no more injustice,” he promised, and he was as good as his word. He became known as the ‘Gentle Monarch’.

Months after his transformation one of his ministers plucked up enough courage to ask him what had brought about his change of heart, and the king answered:

“As I was galloping through my forests I caught sight of a fox being chased by a hound. The fox escaped into his hole but not before the hound had bitten into its leg and lamed it for life. Later I rode into a village and saw the same hound there. It was barking at a man. Even as I watched, the man picked up a huge stone and flung it at the dog, breaking its leg. The man had not gone far when he was kicked by a horse. His knee was shattered and he fell to the ground, disabled for life. The horse began to run but it fell into a hole and broke its leg. Reflecting on all that had happened, I thought: ‘Evil begets evil. If I continue in my evil ways, I will surely be overtaken by evil’. So I decided to change”.

The minister went away convinced that the time was ripe to overthrow the king and seize the throne. Immersed in thought, he did not see the steps in front of him and fell, breaking his neck.

Dokka Seetamma

Annapuurna
Dokkaa Seetamma was born in 1841 in Mandapeta. She was known by many as “Annapuurnamma”. This was because of her sadgunams like Atithi-seva and Anna-daanam. To whoever was hungry, she used to cook food and serve them. In no time her fame went to all directions.

In 1902, December, she was called to Delhi for receiving an award for her daana-gunam. With great Vinayam, thinking that Atithi-seva, Anna-daanam are the minimum things that Bhaarateeya Samskruti imposed in order to show one’s Krutagnyata to his fellow humans, she didnt attend the function to receive the award. She was a true Bhaarateeya who was humble, never thought about name and fame. The collector, knowing this, made a painting of her, put it in the award cermony and respected her.

Once on a heavy rainy day a Vruddha sharana-arthi was shouting like this from the other side of the Godaavari river “I am very hungry. Please give me food. O Seetamma!”. Listening to the aarta-naadam, Seetamma felt pain. She immediately cooked food and herself carried it across the river in the heavy rain and served the hungry old man.

In a village by name Munganda, there was a Bhraatru-hantaka (he killed his own brother for property). Due to this dushkarma, he became a pishaachi. He experienced ghora-narakam with that form. Once he came into a small girl and said “one night Seetamma did great Annadaanam to a Vruddha. Please ask her to give me this one Anna-daana phalam. With this I will get Vimukti”. The family ran to Seetamma and told this. Immediately Seetamma did Phalatyaagam of her Anna-daanam with the help of her Purohita. Before everybody, the pishaachi got Vimukti. Seeing this everybody came to know the greatness of Anna-daanam. Bhaarata-desham will never forget Dokkaa Seetamma. Annadaata Sukhiibhava!

Morals in the story:

The Atithi-seva tattvam, Anna-daana gunam of a Bhaarata-naari is well shown in this story through Dokkaa Seetamma.
The greatness of Anna-daanam is well shown in the story. The punya-phalam of one Anna-daanam was enough to give Vimukti to even a pishaachi.
